The Cleveland Metropolitan Park was the brainchild of WM. A. STINCHCOMB (1878-1959). Stinchcomb's
efforts secured passage of state legislation permitting the establishment
of park districts and the creation of the Cleveland Metropolitan Park Dist. as a separate
subdivision of the State of Ohio. The district was created on 23 July 1917, and the first
park property was acquired 2 years later. Stinchcomb was appointed director of the district
in 1921 and served in that position until 1957. In its early years, the district concentrated
its efforts on acquiring land before advancing values and private development placed it beyond
reach. During the Depression, federal work projects by the WPA
and Civilian Conservation Corps. contributed in a substantial way to the
further development of the parks by building bridges, shelters and trails.
Brecksville Stables
has been a spectacular JEWEL in the Cleveland Metroparks' Emerald Necklace. The main arena
and office area was built in 1967 and the stables added in 1970. The total square footage equaling
16,749 square feet on 112 acres of stable property.
Nestled in the beautiful forest of the
Brecksville Reservation of the Cleveland Metroparks, Brecksville Stables has provided wonderful horse
related experiences for many thousands of people over the past forty
years. Many people learned to ride at the Brecksville Stables and,
in the past, could rent a horse for a guided tour along the 20 miles
of trails that traverse this hilly park. The Stables have
sponsored horse shows, clinics, pony camps, developed riding
programs for boy scouts and girl scouts, conducted educational group
tours and designed and implemented a premier program for therapeutic
riding.
Forty years later, Northeast Ohio horsemen have taken it upon themselves to
revitalize the Brecksville Stables
and a new non profit Brecksville Stables, Inc. has taken on the challenge of
stable management beginning on
January 1, 2011. The Cuyahoga County Chapter of the Ohio Horseman's
Council and other Northeast Ohio horsemen will offer advice and
guidance for this enterprise.
Offering the boarding of horses, equine training and educational opportunities
catering to all disciplines of riding as well as public events of interest and activities, the Stable will once
again be a true credit to the Cleveland Metroparks.
